Propane training and safety rules in Massachusetts

Massachusetts lets someone sit for the LP-gas installer exam only after set classroom hours and supervised work hours. The rule does not list PEP or CETP as a swap for those. 248 CMR 11.02(5).

This is the installer license from the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. It is not a general propane delivery course. Installer examination qualifications.

What the rule says (full installer)

  • Work hours: at least 3,400 clock hours over at least two years. The work must be undiluted LP-gas installation, done under a licensed installer, journeyman or master. 11.02(5)(a)1.
  • HVAC-only work does not count as LP-gas installer experience. 11.02(5)(a)1.
  • Classroom: a high school diploma or equivalent, plus 220 hours of undiluted LP-gas theory in a program that meets Board rules and ends with an exam. 11.02(5)(a)2.
  • Exam tries: more than six tries needs special Board approval. 11.02(5)(b).
  • A limited LP-gas installer is a different path, with its own safety class and 1,700 hours of work. 11.02(6).

What this means for you

Label each employee's work log with the license they are aiming for before they start counting hours. Do not mix the limited-installer checklist with the full-installer one.

Need training for your crew?

We don't run classes. Use the trainers on our Recommended Propane Safety Experts page and contact them directly.

Keep the paper trail

An inspector or insurer will ask to see your records. Our Policies & Procedures manual puts your training policy and written procedures in one place. The Propane Safety App/Tank Spotter keeps each employee's training dates and flags renewals, next to the work-hours record. The Duty to Warn program covers your customer safety notices.
