Michigan's storage and handling rule adopts the 2014 edition of NFPA 58. That adoption excludes transportation. The rule itself does not list a CETP or PEP course sequence. Start with the adopted code for your work, then ask LARA what training evidence applies. This page covers the code reference, not every propane job.
Use the code named in the rule
R 29.6102 names the 2014 edition. A newer course or code book does not, by itself, prove that a worker meets the adopted code.
The same rule set covers facility plan review in R 29.6152. Keep the site file and the staff training file distinct. A site approval is not a training record.
Ask about the work your crew does
Tell LARA's Bureau of Fire Services whether staff fill containers, run plant equipment or do other work. Ask which training and license rules apply. Keep the reply with the course records as a practical office step.
Then check what each person learned against the tasks assigned. This page does not set a refresher period or say that PEP meets every Michigan training duty. Use it to start the check with LARA, not as a full staff training checklist.
Where do CETP and PEP fit?
PERC is moving CETP content into PEP learning paths. Check the path for the work your crew does. For more context, see CETP and PEP and how often CETP training is required.
Put the office policy in writing
Once you know the training needed, put your office process in writing. State who checks due dates and where staff keep the records. See the Policies & Procedures manual. A manual does not replace training, practical skills or required credentials.

Propane training and safety rules in Michigan
Michigan has rules for LP-gas systems as well as a plan-review process. A facility approval and a worker training record serve different purposes.
What the rule says
- R 29.6102 adopts NFPA 58, 2014 edition, for LP-gas storage and handling. It excludes transportation from that adoption.
- R 29.6152 requires a plan-review application at least 30 days before installing a system over 2,000 gallons individual water capacity, over 4,000 gallons aggregate water capacity, or any container filling location.
- The rule also calls for notice to the bureau at least seven calendar days before the completed installation goes into service.

What this means for you
Keep the site plans and review correspondence with the facility file. In a separate crew file, list each job and the training used for it. Ask the Bureau of Fire Services which qualification evidence it will accept for your operation before booking a course.
Need training for your crew?
We don't run classes. Use the trainers on our Recommended Propane Safety Experts page and contact them directly.
Keep the paper trail
Use our Policies & Procedures manual to put your written procedures in one place. Keep course records, skills checks and any required licenses alongside the procedures your crew uses. A manual does not replace training or an agency approval.

Quick questions
Which NFPA 58 edition does the cited Michigan rule adopt? R 29.6102 adopts the 2014 edition for storage and handling, excluding transportation.
Does a small filling location avoid plan review just because its tank is small? R 29.6152 includes any container filling location, as well as the stated large-system thresholds.
Does buying a manual replace training or a required license? No. A manual supports your written procedures. You still need the training, skills and approvals required for the work.
