Oregon makes people pass a State Fire Marshal exam for each propane license. The pass mark is 80 percent. The exam rule does not list PEP or CETP as a replacement. OAR 837-030-0190.
What the rules say
- Oregon has three license types: the installation (company) license, the fitter license and the truck driver license. OAR 837-030-0140 to 0170.
- Every applicant must score at least 80 percent. One person can take exams for more than one license type. OAR 837-030-0190.
- The exams are open book and given online. OAR 837-030-0190.
- Fitters and drivers must take the exam after no more than a 60-day on-the-job training period. OAR 837-030-0190.
- A fitter or driver needs the installation license, unless the employer already holds it. Each propane business or dealership location needs a licensed company representative. OAR 837-030-0140 to 0170.
What this means for you
Count the days. A new driver or fitter has to test within 60 days of starting on the job. Decide which license type each person needs, gather the allowed reference books, and set aside a quiet block of time for the online exam. Watch the inbox for the exam access email.
Need training for your crew?

Keep the paper trail
An inspector or insurer will ask to see your records. Our Policies & Procedures manual puts your training policy and written procedures in one place. The Propane Safety App/Tank Spotter keeps each employee's training dates and flags renewals. The Duty to Warn program covers your customer safety notices.
