How Often Does a Propane Bobtail Need Visual, Leak and Pressure Tests?

The usual 49 CFR 180.407(c) rows call for yearly external visual inspections and leak tests. Internal visual inspections and pressure tests are usually every five years. Some MC 331 tanks qualify for ten years. Tank design and service matter. Have the inspector check your tank against the table before setting dates.

Which tanks get ten years?

The §180.407(c) table lists the conditions. Its ten-year rows cover MC 331 tanks under 3,500 gallons water capacity in dedicated propane service. They must be made of NQT SA-612 steel. Note 5 also covers NQT SA-202 and SA-455 steel with the required test data. Capacity alone does not establish eligibility.

What if the tank has no manhole?

Paragraph (e)(1) addresses tanks with no manhole or inspection opening. It also covers designs that prevent an internal inspection. It requires a hydrostatic or pneumatic test under paragraphs (c) and (g). Ask the inspector how that applies to your truck. Do not plan an internal entry from this summary.

How should the office set reminders?

I would give the inspector the plate data and build records. Ask which row fits and which records support it. Then set a separate reminder for each test type. Link each reminder to its last successful report. These are suggested office steps.

A leak test does not settle every other check. Keep the monthly hose and piping checks on the calendar too. Ask about damage, changed service or other conditions that could require a test sooner.

Questions and answers

Does every small bobtail get ten years?

No. Size is only one condition. Tank specification, steel and service also matter. The inspector needs the records that support the chosen interval.

What if our old calendar looks wrong?

Have the inspector compare the tank’s records with the full rule. Resolve each test date before carrying it into the next calendar.

Next step

Take the tank plate data and last test reports to your inspector. See bobtail operations for help with the truck manual’s scope.
