Propane training and safety rules in Virginia

To sit for the Virginia journeyman LP-gas fitter exam, a person needs classroom hours and years on the job. The rule does not name PEP or CETP as a swap. 18VAC50-30-39(C).

This is a fitter license from the Board for Contractors. It is not a rule about bobtail delivery courses. 18VAC50-30-39.

What the rule says

  • Option 1: 80 hours of formal vocational training plus four years of practical experience in the trade. 18VAC50-30-39(C).
  • Option 2: 40 hours of formal vocational training plus five years of practical experience. 18VAC50-30-39(C).
  • Experience is proven by reference letters from building officials, inspectors, current or former employers, contractors, engineers, architects or clients. Education is proven with a transcript or diploma. 18VAC50-30-47.
  • Up to 40 hours of Board-approved continuing education can count toward the vocational training. 18VAC50-30-48.
  • Renewing an LP-gas fitter license takes one hour of Board-approved continuing education on building-code changes. 18VAC50-30-120(C).
  • The old section 18VAC50-30-40 was repealed. Use the current table in 18VAC50-30-39. Current chapter and repeal notation.

What this means for you

If you have someone heading toward the fitter exam, start gathering the reference letters and school records now, while the people who saw the work are easy to reach. Ask the Board how your coursework will be credited. Keep delivery training and fitter paperwork in separate parts of the roster.

Need training for your crew?

We don't run classes. Use the trainers on our Recommended Propane Safety Experts page and contact them directly.

Keep the paper trail

An inspector or insurer will ask to see your records. Our Policies & Procedures manual puts your training policy and written procedures in one place. The Propane Safety App/Tank Spotter keeps each employee's training dates and flags renewals. The Duty to Warn program covers your customer safety notices.
